Earlier in the year I spotted this Autumn Is For Apple Pie kids book and though there are no kids in this house, it was coming home with me! I was so amused that there was a sweet little book about baking an apple pie with friends. And if you’ve been around here for a while, you’ll know I love apple pie and that I accidentally made it part of the theme around my coffee bar.
With friends in mind, who did I think of baking apple pie with? My sister, Brandis! We picked out our mugs over at the coffee bar and had hot cider while we put the pie together. Days like this are ones we live for! We can’t get enough!
About a year ago, I found the most simple (and tasty) apple pie recipe I’ve ever seen in my vintage Betty Crocker Dinner for Two cook book. It’s so simple that it left me wondering if I forgot something! I’m calling this Three Ingredient Apple Pie, because other than the crust, three ingredients is all you need!
What You’ll Need:
- two pie crusts – store bought or your favorite homemade recipe
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 3/4 tsp nutmeg
- 8 apples, peeled and sliced
While you’re peeling and slicing your apples, preheat the oven to 425 degrees.
I always have a bowl for the peels and another for the apple slices. Brandis was helping peel while I was slicing them. We made a good team!

Cheers! Our apples our done getting peeled and sliced, so now we add our sugar and nutmeg.
Add 3/4 cup sugar over your apples and 3/4 tsp nutmeg. Then gently mix through apples.
Prepare your pie crust in your pie plate. I have yet to venture into making my own crust (don’t judge me, I’ll get there eventually! Ha!), and Pillsbury hasn’t let me down yet! Roll out one crust over your pie plate and fill with apple mixture.
Next, take the second crust and lay it over the top of the apples (or do your fancy designs with the top crust, like a lattice pattern) and pinch both crusts together. I also roll up or fold it over and pinch the crust around the plate. It’s not fancy by any means, but it gets the job done! Next you’ll want to slit holes into the top crust so it can vent. I also like to sprinkle sugar over it as well.
Before it goes in the oven, be sure to cover the edges with tin foil. This prevents it from browning too quickly. You’ll want to remove this about ten minutes before it’s done. And you’ll also want a pan/cookie sheet underneath the pie as it cooks to catch all of the spillage, if you have any at all. Bake for 50-60 minutes until the crust is golden brown.
Steaming hot pie, coming right up! We couldn’t wait to dig in!
Wait until your pie cools down before you cut into it. This will help hold it’s shape!
